First around the world with solar energy
We are utilitarian and optimistic ecologists.
PlanetSolar is a boat equipped with a classical technology which is available on the market. The purpose is to demonstrate that today the renewable energy sources and the technologies allowing to improve the energy efficiency are reliable and high-performance.
PlanetSolar is also a challenge as far as the energy management is concerned. If we use more energy than what nature, through the sun, provides to us, we will exhaust the reserves of our batteries and the boat will no longer move forward. It is thus a message directed to society so that it should not squander the resources that we have at our disposal.
We think that it is possible to divide by two our carbon dioxide emissions by increasing the energetic efficiency. By promoting the development of the renewable energy sources, we could even reduce by almost 40% the quantity of carbon dioxide rejected into our atmosphere.
Between 2050 and 2070, in the case of an exclusive use of the renewable energies, we could totally cancel the non-natural carbon dioxide emissions.
The genesis of the planetsolar project
Since the end of the 80's, Raphael imagines and dreams to achieve a world tour while using a minimum of energy. He first imagines achieving it with the help of an amphibious microlight.
In 2003, with the partners of the company Horus Networks, they are the first in the world to propose to their clients a Web hosting and solar-energy powered electronic mails.
It is in 2004 that Raphael thinks about achieving the first tour of the world in a solar boat. At that time, it is not yet fashionable. He will thus have to first convince the future sponsors and the schools. To do this, he brings together and motivates a team of enthusiasts ready to follow him in this adventure. « At first, I was alone, I only had my dream to convince », explains Raphaël Domjan.
In February 2008, the financing of the boat is secured, thanks to the support of the first main partner.
Today, more than 100 persons are working, across the world, for the PlanetSolar project.
A concentration of futuristic technology
PlanetSolar is a multlihull vessel topped by a large array of photovoltaic solar panels, constructed by Knierim Yacht Club, in Kiel, Germany. Built in 14 months, the biggest solar boat ever built has impressive dimensions and is yet both silent and clean. The goal is to navigate around the world at an average speed of 7.5 knots — no mean feat for a solar-powered craft.
The multihull will be home to four sailors during the round-the-world attempt, and can accommodate up to forty people during the promotional trips planned at each port of call.
The ideal shape and size of the boat for the chosen route will be determined by in-depth research. The PlanetSolar engineers have to factor in a host of parameters — propulsion, solar panel design, energy storage, materials, and the external environment. A whole range of studies will need to be conducted in areas such as the boat's hydro and aerodynamics, the materials used, the management and storage of energy and, finally, the power plant and the optimal routing.
24th June 2010 - Raphaël Domjan will be dedicating the PlanetSolar book
On Saturday 26th of June Raphaël Domjan will be dedicating the PlanetSolar book from 10:00 to 12:00 at the Payot bookshop in Yverdon-les-Bains. This book has been written by Roger Jaunin and is published by the "Editions Favre".
2nd June 2010 - Winners of the remote-controlled solar boat competition at the Hafengeburtstag in Hamburg
Today we know the names of the winners of the competition which took place during the Hafengeburtstag from 7 to 9 May this year.
The winner of the solar boat competition is Gregor Schädel of Kritzmow. With a time of 35 seconds and 45/100th of a second he wins a Candino watch. Well done!
The winner of the draw is Felix Wittern of Hamburg and he also wins à Candino watch.
12th May 2010 - PlanetSolar at the Hafengeburtstag in Hamburg !
News 12 mai 2010 At the beginning of May, the largest solar-powered catamaran in the world navigated for the first time off Kiel, thus marking the beginning of the test phase which should last until the end of the summer. At the same time, the entire PlanetSolar was in Hamburg from the 7th to the 9th of May for the Hafengeburtstag. As the guest of honour at the largest port festival in the world, the PlanetSolar project made its debut with the public and set up its Village on the banks of the River Elbe. 200'000 spectators were able to admire the futuristic lines of the largest solar-powered catamaran in the world and find out about the PlanetSolar project philosophy.
The entire PlanetSolar team is also delighted to announce that the PlanetSolar book has been published. The book (in French, German and English) is for sale on the Editions Favre website, http://www.editionsfavre.com.
